Hanoi to Ha Giang: Limousine vs Sleeper Bus, and Which to Book

The question is not which is more comfortable. It is what state you want to be in on your first morning.

There is no airport and no railway in Ha Giang, so every visitor arrives by road from Hanoi, roughly 300 kilometres. The Hanoi to Ha Giang bus is therefore not a detail of your trip. It is a fixed part of it, twice, and getting it wrong costs you a day at each end.

This guide sets out every departure and price we book, explains what the four vehicle types actually are, and gives an honest recommendation by traveller rather than a single answer. All the figures below are our current transfer prices, and we confirm departures when you book.

The decision in one paragraph

Daytime limousine if you can spare the time. Upright reclining seat, arrive tired but functional, sleep in a bed in Ha Giang City, start the tour rested.

Overnight sleeper if your schedule is tight. Saves a hotel night and gets you there in the morning, at the cost of arriving on whatever sleep you managed on a moving vehicle taking mountain bends.

What the four vehicle types actually are

The names are used loosely across the industry, so here is what they mean on this route.

Limousine

A converted minivan with fewer and larger seats than a standard van, arranged with plenty of legroom. You sit upright and recline. Air conditioning, usually curtains, usually a charging point.

You sit. You do not lie down. That is the whole difference and it is why it suits daytime travel.

Regular Sleeper

The classic Vietnamese long distance bus. Two levels of reclining berths in rows, open plan, everyone in one space. Shoes off at the door and into a plastic bag. Blanket provided.

You lie down, semi reclined rather than flat. It is the cheapest option and it is completely normal here.

VIP Sleeper

The same idea with more space per berth, fewer berths, better bedding and usually some partitioning. More expensive and noticeably more comfortable than a regular sleeper.

Cabin Sleeper

Individual enclosed compartments rather than open berths, each with a curtain or a door. You get a defined private space instead of lying next to a stranger.

This is the one we point solo travellers toward for overnight journeys. The privacy is worth the small difference in price, particularly for solo women.

Limousine vs sleeper, compared properly

The comparison people actually want, laid out.

The two lines that matter most in that table are height and motion sickness, because they are the ones nobody warns you about.

If you are tall, a sleeper berth is short. Not dangerous, just cramped for six or seven hours, and you will spend the night slightly folded.

If you get motion sick, lying flat while a vehicle takes mountain corners is worse than sitting up and looking forward. A daytime limousine in a front seat is the version that works.

The overnight question

The single most consequential decision on this page, so it gets its own section.

The case for overnight: you save a hotel night, you save a daylight travel day, and you arrive in the morning ready to start. On a ten day Vietnam itinerary that is a real saving.

The case against: you are lying on a moving vehicle taking mountain bends for several hours, with lights, stops and other passengers. If you sleep badly, you have spent the first day of a three or four day mountain trip exhausted, and day one is not a day you can repeat.

What we actually see. Guests who take the overnight bus and start the tour the same morning are noticeably flatter on day one than those who arrived the previous afternoon. Some are completely fine. The ones who are not tend to say the same thing, which is that they wish they had not tried to save the night.

What the journey is actually like

Practical texture, because most guides skip it.

Boarding. On sleepers, shoes come off at the door and go into a bag you carry with you. This surprises almost every first time visitor. Wear socks.

Luggage goes in the hold underneath. Keep a small bag with you: phone, charger, medication, water, anything you would be unhappy to lose sight of.

Rest stops happen along the way, at roadside places with toilets and food. They are brief. Note where your vehicle is parked, because in the dark one bus looks much like another.

The road changes character. The first part is flat and fast. The later part climbs and winds, and that is where the difference between sitting up and lying down becomes obvious.

Temperature. Air conditioning is usually enthusiastic. Bring a layer even in summer.

Phone signal comes and goes in the hills. Download anything you want to watch or listen to before you leave.

Arrival in Ha Giang City on the overnight services is early, often before most places are open. If you have a tour starting that day, we handle the gap. If you have arranged your own accommodation, check whether early arrival is a problem for them.

What to keep with you

Short list, and everything on it earns its place.

• Earplugs and an eye mask. The two most useful items on any overnight service.
• A warm layer. Air conditioning plus altitude.
• Motion sickness remedy if you are prone to it, taken before departure rather than when you start to feel it.
• Water and a snack. Rest stops are short and you may not want what is available.
• Charged phone and a power bank. Charging points exist and are not guaranteed to work.
• Medication in your small bag, not in the hold.
• Socks, for the shoes off rule on sleepers.
• Passport, on you. You need it for the border area permit anyway.
• Small notes for the rest stop.

Getting back, and the other routes

Ha Giang is not only connected to Hanoi, which matters if it sits in the middle of a longer trip.

To and from Sapa, the common northwest to northeast connection:

Ha Giang and Cao Bang, if you are doing both provinces independently: 08:00 Limousine 400,000 VND or 16:00 Limousine 450,000 VND. On our combo tours you do not need this, because the tour drives that corridor and finishes in Cao Bang.

Leaving from Cao Bang at the end of a combo tour, to Hanoi Old Quarter or Noi Bai Airport:

Our recommendation on that one: the 11:30 next day limousine, after a proper night's sleep in Cao Bang. Finishing a six day mountain trip by getting straight onto an overnight bus is a poor end to a good week.

Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh and Cat Ba connections exist in both directions. Ha Long and Cat Ba run 650,000 to 800,000 VND per person depending on vehicle, Ninh Binh 400,000 to 550,000 VND. Ask us for the current times for your dates.

Mistakes people make

• Booking a flight around a departure time from an article. Times get adjusted. Confirm with us.
• Taking the overnight bus both ways to save two hotel nights, then spending four days tired.
• Not knowing about the shoes off rule and arriving in complicated footwear.
• Putting medication or a passport in the hold.
• Booking the cheapest sleeper at 190cm tall. The saving is 50,000 VND and the cost is a folded night.
• Assuming Noi Bai costs more than the Old Quarter. It does not. Same price.
• Leaving the return transfer until the last day. Tell us at booking.
• Arriving on the overnight bus and starting a tour at 8am without building in a few hours to recover.
