Ha Giang Itinerary: 3, 4, 5 and 6 Day Plans

Planning a Ha Giang itinerary comes down to one honest question: how many days do you have? The far north of Vietnam rewards every version of the trip, from a quick three day loop to a slow six day run that ends at a waterfall on the border with China.

This guide lays out four plans, 3, 4, 5 and 6 days, so you can match the route to your time, your pace, and the people traveling with you. Every plan is built around a private jeep with a local driver, which shapes how the days feel. You are a passenger, so you can look up, stop when you want, and finish each day with energy to spare. If you are also wondering what to expect on a Ha Giang jeep tour, these day by day plans double as the answer.

How to Choose Your Ha Giang Itinerary

Start with your calendar, then your appetite for driving versus lingering. Here is the short version before the detail:

If you only have a long weekend, the 3 days plan still hits the headline scenery. If you want the trip people rave about, 4 days is the sweet spot. If Ban Gioc Waterfall is on your list, you need 5 or 6 days to do it without rushing.

What Every Ha Giang Itinerary Has in Common

Before the day by day plans, a few things stay the same no matter how long you go.

How you travel

Every trip runs in a private 4x4 with the sides open to the air and a soft top you can raise for sun, rain, or cold. Your driver is local, speaks English, and grew up in these valleys, so the route comes with stories and the freedom to stop anywhere. No strangers share your jeep, and the pace flexes around your group.

Where the trip starts and ends

The Ha Giang plans start and finish in Ha Giang City, where our office is. The Cao Bang combos start in Ha Giang City and end near Ban Gioc or in Cao Bang City, from where most travelers take a night bus back to Hanoi. Getting to Ha Giang from Hanoi is usually a night bus, a limousine van, or a private transfer.

A note on timing and markets

Some of the best moments on the Loop are the markets, and they run on set days. The Dong Van Sunday Market, the Meo Vac market, and the seasonal Khau Vai love market are all worth planning around. Because dates and conditions shift with the season, treat the schedules below as the intended shape of each day rather than a fixed clock. Your driver adjusts on the ground, and it always helps to check the latest updates close to your travel dates.

Ha Giang Itinerary: 3 Days 2 Nights

The classic short loop. Three days is enough to see why this region gets the hype, as long as you are happy with full, rewarding days.

Day 1: Ha Giang City to the Dong Van plateau

You climb out of Ha Giang City toward Quan Ba, where the Heaven's Gate viewpoint opens onto the Twin Mountains and a wide green valley. The road rolls on through Yen Minh, with stops for photos and a roadside lunch. You settle into a homestay on the plateau by evening.

Day 2: Sung La, Dong Van and Lung Cu

A slower morning through the Sung La valley, past stone houses and, in season, fields of flowers. You reach Dong Van and its stone built Old Quarter, with an optional run up to the Lung Cu flag tower at the northern tip of the country. Evening is quiet in Dong Van.

Day 3: Ma Pi Leng and back

The big one. You drive Ma Pi Leng Pass, the cliff road above the Nho Que River, with time at the viewpoints. Many travelers add a boat trip on the Nho Que through the Tu San gorge before the route turns back toward Ha Giang City.

Who it suits: short trips, first timers, anyone who wants the highlights without a lot of spare days. See the full 3 days 2 nights loop tour.

Ha Giang Itinerary: 4 Days 3 Nights

The same loop, unclenched. A fourth day turns a good trip into a relaxed one, with room for a village night at Du Gia and more time at the views.

Day 1: Ha Giang City to Yen Minh

Quan Ba, Heaven's Gate, and a gentle push to Yen Minh. With an extra day in hand, there is no reason to hurry, so you stop more and drive less.

Day 2: Yen Minh to Dong Van

Through Sung La and Pho Bang to Dong Van, with the Lung Cu detour and time to wander the Old Quarter. If your dates land on a Sunday, the Dong Van market is a highlight.

Day 3: Dong Van to Du Gia via Ma Pi Leng

Ma Pi Leng in the morning, Meo Vac after the pass, then a scenic route to Du Gia, a laid back village known for its waterfall and easy evenings.

Day 4: Du Gia back to Ha Giang City

A final morning at the Du Gia waterfall before the road home, closing the loop by afternoon.

Who it suits: most travelers, families, couples who would rather savor the trip than sprint it. This is the plan we recommend most. Details on the 4 days 3 nights tour.

Ha Giang Itinerary: 5 Days 4 Nights

For travelers who want the Ha Giang Loop and Cao Bang in one trip, ending at Ban Gioc Waterfall. The first part mirrors the loop, then the route heads east into a second UNESCO Global Geopark.

Days 1 to 3: The Ha Giang Loop

Quan Ba, Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng, and the villages in between, following the shape of the shorter plans.

Day 4: Crossing into Cao Bang

A driving day east toward Cao Bang, trading the karst spires of Ha Giang for the rivers and valleys of Non Nuoc Cao Bang. There is scenery the whole way, so it never feels like dead time.

Day 5: Ban Gioc and the finale

The reward is Ban Gioc Waterfall, a wide curtain of water on the border, often paired with the nearby Nguom Ngao cave. Depending on the route, you may also see the God's Eye Mountain, the Ngoc Con Valley, and the Pac Bo historical site before the trip ends in Cao Bang.

Who it suits: travelers with a full work week to spare who do not want to choose between Ha Giang and Cao Bang. See the 5 days 4 nights combo.

Ha Giang Itinerary: 6 Days 5 Nights

The unhurried grand tour. Same destinations as the 5 days plan, spread over an extra night so no single day feels long. This version often routes through Bao Lac, adding quieter roads and more time in Cao Bang.

Days 1 to 3: The Loop, slower

The Ha Giang Loop with extra breathing room. More stops, longer lunches, earlier arrivals.

Day 4: Ha Giang toward Bao Lac

A scenic transfer east on some of the region's most peaceful roads, with a night closer to the Cao Bang side.

Day 5: Deeper into Cao Bang

Time for the sights around Cao Bang, from the Ngoc Con Valley to the God's Eye Mountain and Pac Bo, at a pace that lets you actually enjoy them.

Day 6: Ban Gioc and out

The Ban Gioc finale and the Nguom Ngao cave before the trip wraps up in Cao Bang.

Who it suits: comfort seekers, older travelers, anyone who would rather add a day than shave one. Details on the 6 days 5 nights combo.

Prefer to Drive Yourself?

If you are a confident driver and want to set your own rhythm, a self drive option puts you behind the wheel of a proper 4x4. You design the days, choose the stops, and keep the same open road feeling without a fixed group schedule. Look at the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon rental for that kind of freedom.

What to Pack for Any Ha Giang Itinerary

The jeep handles comfort and weather, so your list stays short:

  • Layers. Passes and mornings get cold even in warm months, so bring a jacket or fleece.
  • A rain shell, even though the soft top has you covered.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses for bright, open air days.
  • Comfortable shoes for short walks to viewpoints and villages.
  • A power bank and your camera or phone.
  • Personal medication and a small daypack.
  • Cash in small notes for markets, snacks, and tips.

No riding gear, no helmet, no heavy waterproofs. That is one of the quiet pleasures of doing the Loop this way.

Practical Tips Before You Book

Getting to Ha Giang from Hanoi

Most travelers reach Ha Giang City from Hanoi by night bus, limousine van, or private transfer. Schedules and operators change, so confirm current times close to your dates. Your jeep trip begins and ends in Ha Giang City.

Permits and border areas

Parts of the far north, and the Cao Bang route in particular, pass through border zones that require permits. We arrange these as part of the tour. Rules in border areas can change, so we confirm the latest requirements when you book.

Best time to go and weather

There is no single perfect month. Spring brings flowers, autumn brings golden rice terraces, winter is crisp but cold up high, and summer is green with more rain. The jeep works in all of it. Check the latest seasonal conditions before locking in your dates.

How far ahead to book

Once your travel date is set, book as soon as you can. Most guests book 1 to 3 months in advance. Jeep availability is limited, so early booking helps us line up the right vehicle, homestays, and permits.

Mistakes to Avoid When Planning

  • Cramming too much into too few days. If Cao Bang and Ban Gioc are on your list, give them the 5 or 6 days they need instead of rushing the Loop.
  • Ignoring market days. Sunday in Dong Van is worth building your dates around.
  • Underpacking warm layers. Tropical Vietnam does not apply at altitude. Bring a jacket.
  • Booking last minute in high season. Limited jeeps mean fewer options if you leave it late.
  • Assuming a jeep misses the good bits. It reaches the same passes, villages, and viewpoints, in more comfort.

As with any popular region, use licensed operators, agree on what is included before you go, and keep valuables secure in busy markets. Simple habits, nothing dramatic.

Which Ha Giang Jeep Tour Is Right for You?

A quick recap to match a plan to your trip:

One underrated perk of doing it by jeep: you can stop at any roadside stall or market to eat, and after a glass of ruou ngo at lunch, the driving is not yours to worry about. Foodies, this trip is for you.
